The New York Yankees have been struggling lately to perform to their potential, and fans have been finding interesting ways to cope.
The New York Yankees have been on a downward spiral lately. The leaders of the AL East division still sit comfortably at the top of the standings, but they’re performing far under their potential. This has been difficult on fans, and they’ve been finding interesting ways to cope, such as getting haircuts in the bleachers.
Luckily for fans, the Yankees aren’t nearly out of playoff consideration. According to FanGraphs, they still have a 99.9 percent chance of making it.
They’re also still one of the best teams in the league.
The Yankees shouldn’t be out of playoff consideration yet
New York remains one of the top teams in the league. Their batting average is slightly below league average (.241), where they rank 17th, but the rest of their stats are well above. They have the third-best on-base percentage (.326), slugging percentage (.434) and OPS (.761).
They’re doing just as well with their pitching. They have the third-best ERA (3.28), opponent batting average (.218) and WHIP (1.10).
They’ve yet to win a series this month, which is concerning but injuries are making success more difficult to come by, as they are down some good players, such as DJ LeMahieu and Giancarlo Stanton, with Anthony Rizzo also missing some games earlier in the month.
LeMahieu is out with a toe injury and hasn’t been announced to the injured list yet, but that could change after further testing.
If LeMahieu is out for a while, New York will likely struggle to find the ideal roster. He’s one of the best hitters on the team and is hitting .279/.381/.417 for an OPS of .798.
Stanton’s bat has been missing from the lineup since July 24, but is making steps to return soon. His 24 home runs is good for 18th in the MLB, and his power at the top of the lineup makes it hard for opposing pitchers to catch a break.
Despite unexpected difficulties, the Yankees have a good roster that could bring them back to their fullest potential.
