Texans chairman Cal McNair under fire for using anti-Asian slur

Houston Texans chairman Cal McNair is under fire once for making a racist comment, this time directed at the Asian American community.

As if the Houston Texans haven’t faced enough controversy over the past year, one person in the organization continues to make headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Texans chairman Cal McNair, who has been heavily criticized in the past for offensive and politically-charged remarks directed at Texans players, is making headlines again for an inflammatory comment.

This time, he maligned the Asian American community with a slur that has promoted anti-Asian racism and violence against the community.

But like Gruden, McNair made this comment in the past. In this instance, it was back in May 2021 at the Houston Texans Foundation Charity Golf Classic at River Oaks Country Club. According to eyewitnesses at the event, McNair’s words caused gasps in the audience and upset numerous Texans employees at the event.

What did Texans chairman Cal McNair say?

Addressing a crowd of more than 100 attendees, McNair apologized that he couldn’t gather the Texans community together in 2020 due to the COVID-19 outbreak that spanned the globe.

But while he apologized, McNair disparaged the Asian American community with a sentiment that has spurred violence, hate crimes and even deadly attacks, per Mike Silver of Bally Sports.

“I’m sorry that we couldn’t get together last year, because of the China Virus,” McNair said at the time.

This isn’t the first time McNair has said something to offend the Texans community. In 2017, McNair responded to the NFL players’ protests by claiming that he couldn’t have “inmates running the prison.”

Duane Brown told Pro Football Talk in Oct. 2017 how McNair responded when Barack Obama won the 2012 election.

“He came to talk to the team. He was visibly upset about [the election of Barack Obama]. He said, ‘I know a lot of y’all are happy right now, but it’s not the outcome that some of us were looking for.’ That was very shocking to me.”
