Barcelona have relieved manager Ronald Koeman of his duties after an embarrassing defeat to Rayo Vallecano away from home.
Koeman could tell something was not right with his job status after the defeat, and couldn’t commit to being available for the next game. This is just after Barca’s loss to Real Madrid on Sunday by a score of 2-1.
The latest defeat means that Barcelona is now ninth in La Liga. Something had to change, and Barcelona has acted on that.
“It [Barcelona’s league position] says we’re not well,” said now-former Barca boss Koeman. “The team has lost balance in the squad, lost very effective players, which shows. In recent years other clubs have strengthened every season and we haven’t, which also shows.”

Barcelona president Joan Laporta backed Koeman as recently as Oct. 8.
“We have every confidence in him, he’s our coach, and he deserves some leeway as he believes in the team and hasn’t been able to call on the entire squad yet,” Laporta said.
Yeah, about that…
Soccer fans had some fun at Barcelona’s expense, and reacted to the news of Koeman’s firing on social media.
Barcelona is in trouble, with or without Koeman. That much is certain. It’s unknown as of now who will take over for him, but they have a significant challenge ahead of them, and no Lionel Messi to help guide the ship.
