Duke assistant reveals dumb reason for not shaking Hubert Davis’ hand

Duke assistant coach Chris Carrawell didn’t shake Hubert Davis’ hand after UNC won Coach K’s final home game. Now we know why:

Davis was surprised by the situation, as there wasn’t much animosity between the two teams during this meeting of the sport’s greatest rivalry.

“I don’t know what that’s about,” Davis said. “I didn’t play against him, I don’t know him personally.”

The current UNC head coach was a UNC player from 1988-92, while Carrawell played at Duke from 1996-2000, so there wasn’t any sort of carryover from their playing days.

An ESPN story last Wednesday suggested that some within the Duke program were still angry that UNC didn’t have a tribute to Mike Krzyzewski in his final game at Chapel Hill, as some teams have done on Coach K’s retirement tour.

Why did Chris Carrawell snub Hubert Davis’ handshake?

The answer to that question is simple, per Carrawell. Evidently, Davis did not shake the Duke coaches’ hands pregame, which is customary in this rivalry.

The answer to why Davis snubbed the Duke coaches pregame can likely be explained by the large Blue Devils crowd. The following, from the Raleigh News and Observer, makes this all out to be a misunderstanding:

“Davis had to walk in front of the Duke bench to make his way from the locker room to UNC’s bench. The amount of former Duke players still squeezing their way into the bleachers behind Duke’s bench could have contributed to why.”

There you have it, folks. Grown men acting like babies.

As for Carrawell, it took some attention away from the man who truly deserved it on Saturday night — Krzyzewski himself.
