Boston is casting a wide net when it comes to potential head-coaching candidates. They will also reportedly interview Charles Lee of the Milwaukee Bucks, Jamahl Mosley of the Dallas Mavericks and Ime Udoka of the Brooklyn Nets. Ham works alongside Lee in Milwaukee on Mike Budenholzer’s staff, while Billups is in his first season on Tyronn Lue‘s LA Clippers coaching staff.
One has to think Billups or Ham could very well end up being the next head coach of the Celtics.
Boston Celtics: Chauncey Billups, Darvin Ham to interview for HC vacancy
Though Billups is clearly lacking in coaching experience, he was a former All-Star player that many of Boston’s stars grew up watching. He could be more relatable to this team’s current core, perhaps more than Stevens ever could. Ham has been Budenholzer’s top assistant for years. He is a former NBA player himself and a college star with the Texas Tech Red Raiders well before that.
Overall, Billups and Ham have to be at the top of the list for candidates to be the next head coach in Boston. While Billups would be the more marquee hire of the two, many Budenholzer assistants have had success leading their own teams, most notably Quin Snyder of the Utah Jazz, Taylor Jenkins of the Memphis Grizzlies and Kenny Atkinson, who is now an assistant with Billups in L.A.
It serves Boston to interview as many coaching candidates as possible in this offseason cycle.
