Jalen Milroe had to enter the game in the first half after Alabama quarterback Bryce Young suffered what looks to be a major shoulder injury.
While the Alabama Crimson Tide have a commanding lead at the Arkansas Razorbacks, an injured Bryce Young gave way to Jalen Milroe under center.
The reigning Heisman Trophy winner suffered what appears to be a significant shoulder injury. He came down on his shoulder near the sideline and immediately went into the medical tent. Milroe was thrust into duty in a hostile environment, but the stage does not look too big for him in the moment. Arkansas is good, but Alabama is still better. Regardless, everyone is freaking out here.
Here is what you need to know about the Alabama backup quarterback until Young is able to play.
Bryce Young injury: What you need to know about Alabama QB Jalen Milroe
Milroe is a redshirt freshman from Katy, Texas. He is 6-foot-2 and 212 pounds. Prior to being forced into action vs. Arkansas in the first half, he appeared in seven games with the Crimson Tide over the last two seasons. Heading into Week 5, Milroe completed 15-of-25 passes for 127 yards, two touchdowns and a pick. He also had 21 carries for 129 yards and an additional trip to pay dirt.
According to the 247Sports Composite, Milroe was the No. 13 quarterback in his class, the No. 14 player from Texas and the No. 82 overall recruit in 2021. The four-star signal-caller had a day-three NFL Draft projection coming out of high school, being compared favorably to former Tennessee star Joshua Dobbs. His dual-threat playmaking abilities are huge assets for the Tide.
One thing that is very interesting about Milroe is his high school recruitment. He had 23 official offers, but only took one official visit. That was to Texas on June 19, 2020. Milroe had committed to Texas the year prior on July 21, 2019, but flipped to Alabama a little over a year late on Aug. 17, 2020. Jeff Banks and Steve Sarkisian were his primary recruiters. Both are now coaching at Texas.
Alabama should be alright with Milroe filling in for Young, but the team’s ceiling does take a hit.
